Springbrook Defeats DeMatha at The Rock
by Brandy Simms  6/11/2010

Final Score: 71-57 (Springbrook)

Leading Scorer: Springbrook: Brandon Hedley (33 points); DeMatha: Quinn Cook (26 points)

Player of the Game: Springbrook: Brandon Hedley (33 points)

Bottom Line: In a meeting between arguably the area’s top private school basketball program and one of the top public school basketball programs in Maryland, the Springbrook Blue Devils defeated DeMatha behind the stellar three-point shooting of Blake transfer Brandon Hedley, who knocked down nine three-pointers in the contest.

Springbrook jumped out to an early 13-3 lead before DeMatha rising seniors Quinn Cook and Mikael Hopkins emerged from the shadows. Cook scored a layup on an inbounds pass and Hopkins knocked down a free throw to cut the deficit to 13-11 before the Stags tied the score with about seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Hedley’s three-pointer with 36.9 seconds remaining gave the Blue Devils a 27-23 advantage before Hopkins converted a free throw with twenty seconds left in the half. Cook’s three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark and Springbrook led 27-24 at the midway point.

A Hopkins slam dunk with 16:02 remaining in the second half tied the game at 31-31 before Springbrook began to pull away. The Blue Devils went on a 19-8 run and cruised to victory behind Hedley’s remarkable shooting display.

“My team trusted me and I had confidence in myself,” said Hedley. “I was in the flow so I just had to knock [the shots] down.”
