Roosevelt vs. Old Mill, 4:20pm
Final Score: 46-22 (Roosevelt)
Leading Scorer: Roosevelt: Nieronn Miles (11 points)
Player of the Game: Roosevelt: Prince Okoroh (10 points)
Bottom Line: Saying the matchup between the Roosevelt Raiders and the Old Mill Patriots was a one-sided affair would be a huge understatement. Roosevelt blew past Old Mill in dominant fashion Friday.
Early on, the Raiders shut down the Patriots offense and set the stage for the entire game. "Our defense was looking good" said Roosevelt junior and team captain Prince Okoroh after the blowout. "Our offense was a little sloppy in the beginning, but that picked up as we played more."
The Raiders' offense did indeed pick up towards the middle of the second half as they went on a 22-6 run. Once they had a double-digit lead, there was no turning back.
Springbrook vs. Friendship, 5:30pm
Final Score: 56-51 (Friendship)
Leading Scorer: Friendship: Desmond Stanback (25 points)
Player(s) of the Game: Friendship: Desmond Stanback (25 points) and Joseph Lundy (10 points)
Bottom Line: You might have thought it was All-Star weekend watching this one as it was quite the showcase for three-point shots and slam dunks. Thanks to the aggressive play of Stanback and Lundy, the Knights were able to capture the victory.
Springbrook junior Brandon Hedley's 5-5 shooting from beyond the arc wasn't enough to combat the combined forces of Friendship sophomores Desmond Stanback (25 points) and Joseph Lundy (10 points). Thanks to Lundy's playmaking skills, Stanback was set up to step back and drain many threes, and slam down some serious dunks.
Head Coach James Pope explained, "(Joseph) Lundy and (Desmond) Stanback are young, but they are the only two on this year's team that have had some sort of varsity experience and we expect big things out of them."
Good Counsel vs. Arundel, 6:40pm
Final Score: 52-44 (Good Counsel)
Leading Scorer: Good Counsel: Matt McCarthy (15 points)
Player(s) of the Game: Good Counsel: Matt McCarthy (15 points), Matt Merryman (13 points), and Randy Echols (13 points)
Bottom Line: Good Counsel overcame a slow start to overtake Arundel."We always start off slow" said senior Matt Merryman after the win. "But coach just lets us play."
The score was only 18-18 at the half before the Falcons' terrific seniors stepped up.
Oakland Mills vs. Carroll, 7:50pm
Final Score: 51-50 (Oakland Mills)
Leading Scorer: Carroll: Kenny Osse (17 points)
Player of the Game: Oakland Mills: Joe Kiely (11 points)
Bottom Line: With only seconds left, Oakland Mills' Joe Kiely hit the game winning layup to knock off Carroll.
According to Carroll coach Reggie Williams, the loss could have been avoided but due to "lots of mental mistakes," Carroll was unable to pull it out. Kenny Cherry had missed the front-end of a one-and-one on the last Carroll possession to give Oakland Mills a chance.
DuVal vs. Long Reach, 9:00pm
Final Score: 57-36 (DuVal)
Leading Scorer: Long Reach: Sal Salnei (13 points)
Player(s) of the Game: DuVal: Christopher Wilson (12 points), Paris Jones and Alfonzo King
Bottom Line: Shots were not falling for Long Reach and their defense was unable to contain Duval.
King made a lot of plays for Duval, Wilson led them in scoring and Jones led the shutdown defense. Sal Salhei scored a game high 13 points for Long Reach but it wasn't enough.
